Quick answer: In small amounts. Broccoli is safe as an occasional treat, but large amounts can irritate the gut — and stalks can choke.
Broccoli is a healthy, vitamin-C-rich veggie that’s fine for dogs in moderation — with a couple of things to watch for.
The florets contain isothiocyanates
Broccoli florets contain isothiocyanates, which can cause mild-to-moderate stomach upset if a dog eats a lot. A few small pieces are fine; a big bowlful is not.
Mind the stalks
Broccoli stems can be a choking hazard and may block the esophagus, especially in small dogs. Chop into small, manageable pieces.
How to serve it
Serve plain — raw or steamed — with no butter, oil, salt, or seasoning. Keep broccoli (and all treats) under 10% of daily calories.
🐾 Vet-informed safety note. Broccoli is safe in small amounts but should never make up a large part of a meal. Stop if you notice gas or loose stools. Guidance consistent with the AKC.
