Quick answer: In moderation. Plain baked bread is generally safe in small amounts — but raw dough is dangerous, and some add-ins are toxic.

A bite of plain bread won’t hurt most dogs, but bread is mostly empty calories — and one form of it is genuinely dangerous.

Never raw yeast dough

Raw bread dough is a medical emergency. It keeps rising in the warm stomach, causing painful bloat, and the yeast produces alcohol that can lead to alcohol poisoning. Keep rising dough well out of reach.

Watch the add-ins

Avoid breads with raisins, garlic, onion, nuts, chocolate, or xylitol — all of which are toxic to dogs. Plain white or wheat bread is the safest choice.

Empty calories

Plain baked bread offers little nutrition and can pad on calories, so it’s an occasional nibble at most — skip it for dogs with wheat sensitivities.

🐾 Vet-informed safety note. Plain baked bread in small amounts is fine for most dogs; raw dough and toxic add-ins are not. If your dog eats raw dough, call your vet immediately. Source: ASPCA Animal Poison Control.
