Quick answer: In moderation. Plain, unsweetened yogurt is fine for most dogs — but it must be xylitol-free, and some dogs are lactose-sensitive.
A spoonful of plain yogurt can be a creamy, probiotic-friendly treat — but the label matters more than you’d think.
Choose plain and unsweetened
Pick plain yogurt with no added sugar and — critically — no xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Avoid flavored yogurts, which are loaded with sugar.
Lactose: not every dog tolerates it
Dogs have limited lactase, so dairy can cause gas, loose stools, or an upset stomach. Plain Greek yogurt is lower in lactose and usually better tolerated. Start with a tiny amount.
A nice frozen treat
A dollop of plain yogurt frozen with a few dog-safe berries makes a refreshing summer snack.
🐾 Vet-informed safety note. Offer only plain, xylitol-free yogurt, in small amounts. Skip dairy entirely for dogs with known sensitivities, and check with your vet if unsure. Source: ASPCA on xylitol toxicity.
