Quick answer: Best avoided — avocado contains persin and the large pit is a serious hazard. Skip it to be safe.
Avocado is one of those “it depends” foods that’s simply not worth the risk for most dogs. Here’s the honest picture.
The concerns
Avocado contains persin, which is most concentrated in the pit, skin and leaves and can cause stomach upset. The flesh is far lower in persin, but it’s very high in fat (a pancreatitis risk), and the large pit is a major choking and intestinal-blockage hazard.
Our take
Because the safe margin is small and the pit is genuinely dangerous, we recommend skipping avocado and choosing a safer treat. If your dog snatches a small piece of plain flesh, it’s usually not an emergency — but watch them and call your vet with any concerns.
🐾 Vet-informed safety note. Avoid feeding avocado; never let a dog access the pit. If ingested, contact your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. Source: ASPCA / American Kennel Club.
